|| PRE-ALGEBRA ||

|| ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION IN EQUATIONS ||

FOR AGES 10 AND 11

POINTS TO REMEMBER :

* In an equation, changing the order of the numbers you are adding doesn't change their sum.

For Example:

a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c = (b + c) + a = a + c + b.

** Any number plus 0 (zero) equals itself.

For Example:

a + 0 = a.

*** If two sides of an equation are equal, you can-

1. add the same amount to both sides, or

2. you can subtract the same from both sides,

and they will still be equal.

For Example:

a = b

a + c = b + c

a - c = b - c.

Exercise:

Problem

x + 35 = 153

Solution:

x + 35 = 153

x + 35 - 35 = 153 - 35 = 118

x = 118

Problem

b - 62 = 216

Solution:

b - 62 = 216

b - 62 + 62 = 216 + 62 = 278

b = 278
